ABOUT NSHIA
Somalia’s National Institution for Social Health Protection
The National Social Health Insurance Authority (NSHIA) is Somalia’s principal institution for social health protection and health financing reform. Established as a public authority under the Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services, it is structured to pool resources, strategically purchase health services, and safeguard Somali households from financial hardship associated with seeking care. Somalia is currently undergoing a significant transition from fragmented, high out-of-pocket health financing toward a unified national model grounded in solidarity, accountability, and financial protection. NSHIA plays a pivotal role in this shift by aligning public resources, subsidies, and other funding streams into a system designed to promote equitable access to healthcare and enhance stewardship of health expenditures.
